The Hunger We're Called to Feed

"Give us this day our daily bread." (Matthew 6:11, NKJV) When we think of mission work, it’s easy to picture traveling to distant countries, reaching out to poor communities, and meeting their physical needs. We often think of feeding hungry children, providing clean water, or building homes for those in poverty. While these efforts are vital and a reflection of Christ’s love, we must recognize that mission work goes far beyond addressing physical hunger. There is a far greater hunger that exists all over the world, and it is a spiritual hunger.

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus reminds us, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Just as we need food to survive physically, we also need God's Word to sustain us spiritually. Without it, we starve. Spiritual hunger is not always visible, but it is just as real as physical hunger. People may be going through their daily routines, but deep down, many are longing for the Bread of Life—the truth of God's Word.

Jesus also speaks to this need in Matthew 25:35-36: "For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me." These verses remind us to care for the physical needs of others, but there is also a spiritual parallel. People are spiritually hungry, thirsty, and naked. They need the Word of God to fill them, the Living Water to quench their thirst, and the righteousness of Christ to clothe them.

We are called to feed those who are spiritually starving, just as we would feed someone who is physically hungry. If we saw someone hungry for food, we would rush to help. We must open our eyes to the spiritual hunger around us and do the same—share the Bread of Life with those who need it most.

Prayer: Father, help me see the spiritual hunger around me. Open my eyes to those who are longing for Your Word, and give me the courage to share it. Thank You for being the Bread of Life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
