The Blessed State of the Righteous

"Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments." —Psalm 112:1

The psalmist begins with a powerful statement: blessings come to those who fear the Lord. But what does "fearing the Lord" mean? In our modern understanding, fear is often associated with terror or dread. However, the original Hebrew sheds light on a different meaning.

The Hebrew word yirah, used here, is better translated as awe, reverence, or deep respect. This isn’t about being scared of God but standing in amazement at His power, holiness, and love. It’s the kind of awe that brings us closer to Him, urging us to worship, obey, and trust Him. Understanding this distinction is foundational to our faith.

To fear the Lord is to recognize His sovereignty and place Him above all else in our lives. This reverence shapes our thoughts, actions, and decisions, aligning us with His will. It is this posture of humility and surrender that opens the door to God’s blessings.

Psalm 112 details the blessings that come to those who fear the Lord—a legacy of righteousness, peace, and provision. However, if we are not experiencing these blessings, it’s worth asking ourselves if we are truly living in awe of God. This isn’t about earning His favor but being in the right posture to receive what He desires to give us.

Sometimes, God withholds blessings because the timing isn’t right or our hearts are not ready. Like a loving parent, He knows what we need and when we need it. Trusting Him in these moments teaches us patience and deepens our faith. Living in the fear of the Lord teaches us humility, obedience, and trust, aligning us with His will and preparing us to receive His blessings in His perfect timing.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to fear You with awe and reverence. Help me trust in Your timing and wisdom, knowing that You desire only good for me. Align my heart with Yours so I may honor You in all I do and receive Your blessings with humility and gratitude. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
